With Cristian Tello expected to complete his move to the Stadio Artemio Franchi in the coming days, it allows coach Paulo Sousa to now experiment a number of different systems.
Fiorentina‘s Spanish contingent will be increased to five players when Cristian Tello formalizes his loan move from Barcelona within the coming days.
The 24-year-old’s arrival will be a welcome boost for coach Paulo Sousa, who’s side are in the midst of a mini-slump having lost four of their past six games in all competitions.
His pace, dribbling and quick change of direction ensures he can become a weapon for the Viola, who are starting to become a bit of a predictable quantity for Serie A teams.
Sousa has preferred a 3-4-2-1/3-4-3 with Borja Valero and Josip Ilicic in behind Nikola Kalinic, that has worked reasonably well in general, but can sometimes be too slow when breaking on the counter.
Tello’s arrival would mean he would slot in Valero’s position, with the playmaker dropping deeper next to Matias Vecino, which in turn would give the Viola more of a goal threat on the counter-attack.
Another option would be to incorporate a 4-2-3-1 that would allow Sousa to play all his attacking stars in their natural positions. Tello and Federico Bernardeschi would be the inverted wingers, with Ilicic behind Kalinic.
Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque still thinks highly of the winger, whom he described as a player with unique speed, and Barcelona are not ready to give up on his talent after they negotiated a buy-back clause with Fiorentina.
Tello will arrive on loan until the end of the season, whereby Fiorentina have an option to make the move permanent for €8 million. Barcelona can choose to negate that option and bring him back to the Camp Nou for €16m however.
